An audio book of a 6-CD set that contains the 19th century Russian spiritual classic on prayer that has long fascinated those who have stumbled on this winsome tale. First published in Russian in 1884, this religious masterpiece recounts the adventures of an anonymous Russian pilgrim who roams the vast Siberian steppes reciting the Jesus Prayer in order to obey Christ's injunction to "pray without ceasing." Apparently a wise old monk collected for posterity the captivating accounts of the pilgrim's exploits and his increasing understanding of God's providence as he commits himself to a life of prayer. The manuscript, which began to circulate privately after the pilgrim disappeared headed for Jerusalem, has been reissued in a translation by R.M. French narrated here by Sue Talley. The pilgrim's charming tales and dedicated life-style are an inspirational challenge for all who would discover their own spiritual roots, pursue the contemplative life or assimilate their piety to our modern society. Many use this unique devotional tale and refer to it often for they have found it a comforting source of hope when they encounter trials along life's way.

Although it is one person’s travels and experiences, it is an excellent book that was recommended to me by a friend on a different spiritual path. This will have one thinking of their own faith and commitment. Definitely worth reading.Product details

The Way of a Pilgrim and the Pilgrim Continues His Way Sue Talley 9781891295096 Books Reviews
Beautiful story that teaches you the Jesus prayer. Highly recommended by many saints including the recent Elder Joseph the Hesychast from Mt. Athos. You will enjoy.
Finally, a book that made sense to me. Right from the beginning I saw myself in the Pilgrim. "That's me!" I immediately said to myself.
"On the 24th Sunday after Pentecost I went to church to say my prayers there during the Liturgy. The First Epistle of St. Paul to the Thessalonians was being read and among other words I heard these--'Pray without ceasing.'
"It was this text, more than any other, which forced itself upon my mind and I began to think how it was possible to pray without ceasing, since people need to concern themselves with other things also in order to make a living. . . .
"What ought I to do?" I thought. "Where shall I find someone to explain it to me?"
I continue searching for a spiritual advisor, a person who is deeply spiritual, and not just on the surface, as the ones I meet seem to be. *sigh*
This book touched me more than the hundreds (literally) of books I've read in search of a clear explanation on prayer and the way to live a Jesus-centered life. I wish I had found this book years ago. Oh, and the biggest thing from this book--The Jesus Prayer. In all the books I've read, why have I never heard of this prayer? This is a huge revelation for me. I now say this prayer throughout the day, every day.
I love this Pilgrim, who has taught me so much in a kind and loving manner, but I still need that spiritual advisor, and will continue my search.
Truly inspiring to develop a deeper relationship with God through the discipline of contemplative prayer. It's too bad this is a lost discipline in the West. This is an amazing book that could possibly compare to the classic book Pilgrim's Progress.
My daughter recommended and so I purchased the kindle version. There is so much richness here that I purchased the actual book and am planning to read again during lent.
Great bedside read for a fellow Pilgrim of Jesus Christ. Th epower is in the name of Jesus-)
I am still in the process of reading this book. I can see why this is considered a "classic" and would recommend it to anyone interested in deepening their spiritual walk with the practice of "unceasing prayer".
A portion from "The Pilgrim Continues His Way" ---"It brings the mind and the heart into a proper state from time to time........for if he uninterruptedly, at all times, and in all circumstances, offers the prayer, calling in secret upon the most holy name of Jesus.....then he will have no time for vain conversation, for judging his neighbors, for useless waste of time in sinful pleasures of the senses. Every evil thought of his would meet opposition to its growth. Every sinful act he contemplated would not come to fruition so readily as with an empty mind. Much talking and vain talking would be checked or entirely done away with, and every fault at once cleansed from the soul by the gracious power of so frequently calling upon the divine name. The frequent exercise of prayer would often recall the soul from sinful action and summon it to what is the essential exercise of it's skill, to union with God." (pg. 169-170)
I am awed by how timeless the advice is that the "pilgrim" has collected in this little book. If you, too, are seeking the path to holiness the "Way of the Pilgrim" could be the way for you too!
The Way of a Pilgrim is the essence of Christian mysticism which is clearly expressed in the first 10 pages. I've been reading it for over 50 years It can be read by anyone with a serious interest in spiritual practice regardless of their religion,or non religion.
Another fine book in this vein is The Spiritual Athlete a Primer for the Inner Life also available from
Although it is one person’s travels and experiences, it is an excellent book that was recommended to me by a friend on a different spiritual path. This will have one thinking of their own faith and commitment. Definitely worth reading.
